Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tsp hot sauce (Optional)
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 0.5 tsp seasoned salt
- 0.5 tsp salt
- 0.5 tsp black pepper
- 1.5 cups macaroni
- 3.5 cups broth or water (Low-sodium broth is recommended if available. Chicken broth, vegetable broth, or water may be used.)
- 0.5 cup sour cream
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (Freshly shredded from a block is recommended because it melts better than bagged pre-shredded cheese.)
Steps
- 1
Cook the ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat until it is no longer pink. Drain all of the grease, optionally wipe the skillet with a paper towel, and return the beef to the pan.
- 2
Reduce the heat to low. Add the ketchup, Dijon mustard, optional hot sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, seasoned salt, salt, and black pepper to the skillet.
- 3
Add the macaroni and broth or water. Stir thoroughly so the seasonings are evenly mixed and the macaroni is submerged in the liquid; use the back of a wooden spoon if needed.
- 4
Cover the skillet with a tight-fitting lid and simmer for 12–15 minutes, until the macaroni is tender. Lift the lid and stir once or twice during cooking.
- 5
Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in the sour cream until the mixture is creamy and well combined.
- 6
Return the skillet to the warm burner and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until it is melted and fully incorporated.
Notes
The recipe contains no milk; sour cream provides the creaminess and tang. Use freshly shredded cheddar for the smoothest melting. The source recommends low-sodium broth when possible and notes that chicken broth, vegetable broth, or water can be used.
