- 0.333 cup pickled jalapeños (Optional)
- oil (For cooking; amount as needed)
- 1 tbsp oil (Added when cooking the steak)
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese (Shredded)
- 4 slices provolone cheese
- 1 cup milk (For the cheese sauce)
- 2 tbsp butter (For the cheese sauce)
- 2 tbsp flour (For the cheese sauce)
- 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese (For the cheese sauce)
- 0.5 tsp cayenne pepper (For the cheese sauce)
- 0.5 cup butter (Softened; for the garlic butter)
- 4 cloves garlic (Finely minced)
- 1 tbsp parsley (Finely chopped)
- 1 tsp red chili flakes (For the garlic butter)
- chives (For garnish; amount not specified)
Steps
- 1
Preheat the oven to 355°F.
- 2
Make the garlic butter by combining the softened butter, finely minced garlic, chopped parsley, salt, black pepper, and red chili flakes in a bowl. Mix well and set aside.
- 3
For the cheese sauce, place a pan over medium-high heat and melt the butter.
- 4
Whisk the flour into the melted butter, then slowly whisk in the milk.
- 5
Add the sharp cheddar cheese. Season with salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper, and mix until the cheese is melted.
- 6
Heat oil in a cast-iron skillet. Add the sliced onion and green bell pepper, season with salt, and sauté until cooked and caramelized. Remove the vegetables from the skillet and set aside.
- 7
Increase the skillet heat to high and add 1 tablespoon oil. Spread the thinly sliced steak in an even layer.
- 8
Let the steak brown undisturbed for a couple of minutes, then flip it. Season with salt, black pepper, red chili flakes, and garlic powder.
- 9
Sauté until the steak is fully cooked through, then stir in the cooked onions and bell pepper.
- 10
Add the provolone cheese and let it melt over the steak mixture.
- 11
Cut the French bread in half and apply the garlic butter to the cut sides.
- 12
Add the shredded mozzarella cheese to the buttered bread.
- 13
Top the bread with the cooked steak mixture, then spoon the cheese sauce over the top.
- 14
Place the assembled bread on a prepared baking dish. Bake for 20–25 minutes, until golden brown and crispy.
- 15
Garnish with chives and red chili flakes before serving.
Notes
The source lists mushrooms and pickled jalapeños as optional, but does not specify when to add them. The source also lists cooking oil without an amount and separately specifies 1 tablespoon for the steak. Chives are listed only as a garnish in the method, without a quantity.
