  • oil for frying (Use enough oil for frying; amount not specified)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (for the wet batter)
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch (for the wet batter)
  • 1 tsp baking powder (for the wet batter)
  • salt (to taste; for the wet batter)
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder (for the wet batter)
  • 1 tbsp smoked paprika powder (for the wet batter)
  • 1 tsp black pepper powder (for the wet batter)
  • 0.667 cup cold water (Use less or more as needed to make a thick batter)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (for the dry batter)
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch (for the dry batter)
  • 1 tbsp dried parsley (for the dry batter)
  • salt (to taste; for the dry batter)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder (for the dry batter)
  • 1 tsp black pepper powder (for the dry batter)
  • 1.5 cup panko breadcrumbs (for the dry batter)
  • 0.5 cup mayonnaise (for the sauce)
  • 2 tbsp ketchup (for the sauce)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (for the sauce)
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder (for the sauce)
  • salt and pepper (to taste; for the sauce)

Steps

  1. 1

Peel the onions and slice them into 1-inch-thick rings. Separate the rings and remove the membranes. Carefully pat the onion rings dry if they have any moisture.

  2. 2

Make the wet batter: in a bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, garlic powder, smoked paprika powder, and black pepper powder.

  3. 3

Gradually add the cold water to the wet-batter mixture, stirring until a thick batter forms. Use slightly less or more water as needed to reach the stated thick consistency.

  4. 4

Make the dry batter: in a separate bowl, mix the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, dried parsley, salt, garlic powder, black pepper powder, and panko breadcrumbs until evenly combined.

  5. 5

Dip each onion ring into the wet batter, turning it so the ring is evenly coated.

  6. 6

Roll each wet-battered onion ring in the dry mixture, ensuring it is evenly coated on all sides.

  7. 7

Prepare the sauce by mixing the mayonnaise, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and salt and pepper to taste in a bowl.

  8. 8

Heat the frying oil to 350°F (175°C).

  9. 9

Fry the coated onion rings in batches of 3 to 4 at a time for 2 to 3 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.

  10. 10

Serve the onion rings hot with the sauce.

Notes

The source does not specify the total quantity or type of frying oil; use enough for frying. Frying batches should not be overcrowded.
