Ingredients

  • 450 g firm tofu
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce or tamari (Use tamari for a gluten-free version.)
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tbsp toasted sesame oil
  • 6 tbsp nutritional yeast (Also called alimentary yeast in Quebec.)
  • 4 tbsp cornstarch

Steps

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 200°C (390°F). With your hands, tear the block of firm tofu into irregular pieces, approximately 2 cm by 2 cm. The pieces do not need to be perfectly uniform.

  2. 2

Place the torn tofu in a mixing bowl. Add the soy sauce or tamari, balsamic vinegar, toasted sesame oil, nutritional yeast, and cornstarch, then combine thoroughly until the tofu pieces are evenly coated.

  3. 3

Spread the coated tofu evenly in a single layer on a baking sheet, leaving space between pieces where possible.

  4. 4

Bake at 200°C (390°F) for 30 minutes, until the tofu nuggets are cooked through and lightly browned. Use the chicken-style tofu in wraps, salads, stir-fries, fajitas, or sandwiches.

Notes

For a gluten-free version, use tamari instead of soy sauce. The recipe is suitable for batch cooking and can be used in sandwiches, pita breads, fajitas, salads, vegetable stir-fries, and wraps.
