Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp salted butter (For the apple filling)
  • 2 cup apples (Peeled and small-diced; Granny Smith and Honeycrisp were used)
  • 0.333 cup brown sugar
  • 1.5 tsp cinnamon (For the apple filling)
  • 0.25 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp vanilla (For the apple filling)
  • 0.5 cup salted butter (Sliced; for melting in the 9×9-inch baking dish)
  • 2.5 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 tsp baking powder
  • 1.5 tsp kosher salt
  • 0.333 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.5 tsp cinnamon (For the biscuits)
  • 2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tbsp salted butter (Melted for the dough)
  • 1 tsp vanilla (For the biscuit dough)
  • turbinado sugar (For topping; use generously)
  • butter (For serving, if desired)
  • maple syrup (For serving, if desired)

Steps

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).

  2. 2

Peel and small-dice the apples if they are not already prepared.

  3. 3

Cook the apples with 2 tablespoons salted butter, brown sugar, 1½ teaspoons cinnamon, and nutmeg for 4–6 minutes, until slightly softened and syrupy.

  4. 4

Remove the apple mixture from the heat and stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla.

  5. 5

Melt ½ cup (1 stick) salted butter in a 9×9-inch baking dish.

  6. 6

In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, kosher salt, granulated sugar, and ½ teaspoon cinnamon.

  7. 7

Stir in the buttermilk, 2 tablespoons melted salted butter, and 1 teaspoon vanilla to make the biscuit batter.

  8. 8

Fold the cooked apple mixture into the batter.

  9. 9

Spread the batter over the melted butter in the baking dish. Score the batter into 9 biscuits.

  10. 10

    Top generously with turbinado sugar.

  11. 11

Place the baking dish on a lined sheet pan and bake for 30–35 minutes. If the biscuits are well browned around 27 minutes, loosely tent the dish with foil for the remainder of baking.

  12. 12

Serve warm, with butter and maple syrup if desired.

Notes

The post does not specify a measured amount for the turbinado sugar topping or optional butter and maple syrup for serving.
