Ingredients
- 2 cup granulated sugar (for nougat)
- 0.5 cup light corn syrup (for nougat)
- 2 tbsp water (1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons)
- 0.5 cup salt (pinch)
- 2 egg whites
- 35 Kraft caramels (unwrapped)
- 0.25 cup semisweet chocolate chips (for nougat)
- 24 oz milk-chocolate chips (two 12-ounce bags; for coating)
Steps
- 1
In a heavy saucepan, combine the granulated sugar, light corn syrup, 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons of water, and a pinch of salt.
- 2
Using a heavy-duty mixer, beat the 2 egg whites until stiff peaks form.
- 3
Cook the sugar mixture over medium heat until it reaches the soft-ball stage (approximately 235°F to 240°F).
- 4
Slowly pour the hot syrup into the beaten egg whites while continuing to beat with the mixer until the mixture is thick and holds its shape.
- 5
Melt the 1/4 cup of semisweet chocolate chips and fold them into the nougat mixture until well combined.
- 6
Spread the nougat into a greased or parchment-lined pan and allow it to set.
- 7
Melt the 35 unwrapped Kraft caramels (with a splash of water if needed) and spread evenly over the set nougat layer.
- 8
Once the caramel and nougat are firm, cut into 14 rectangular bars.
- 9
Melt the two 12-ounce bags of milk-chocolate chips in a double boiler or microwave.
- 10
Dip each bar into the melted milk chocolate until fully coated, then place on wax paper to cool and harden.
