Ingredients
- 2 lb Ground Beef (lean)
- 4 Russet Potatoes (peeled and cubed)
- 1 Yellow Onion (diced)
- 3 clove Garlic (minced)
- 4 tbsp Butter (unsalted, for mashed potatoes)
- 0.5 cup Milk (whole milk, for mashed potatoes)
- 2 cup Shredded Cheddar Cheese (divided)
- 0.5 cup Beef Broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
- Salt (to taste)
- Black Pepper (to taste)
- 1 tbsp Olive Oil (for sautéing)
Steps
- 1
Place the peeled and cubed potatoes in a large pot of salted water. Bring to a boil and cook for 15-20 minutes until fork-tender.
- 2
While potatoes cook, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the diced onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
- 3
Add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and no longer pink. Drain excess fat if necessary.
- 4
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- 5
Add the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce to the meat mixture. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Simmer for 5 minutes to allow flavors to melate and liquid to reduce slightly.
- 6
Drain the cooked potatoes and return them to the pot. Mash with butter and milk until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper.
- 7
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- 8
Transfer the beef mixture into a 9x13 inch baking dish, spreading it into an even layer.
- 9
Sprinkle 1 cup of the shredded cheddar cheese over the beef layer.
- 10
Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the cheese and beef layers. Use a fork to create peaks on the surface if desired.
- 11
Top the potatoes with the remaining 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese.
- 12
Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the edges are starting to brown.
- 13
Let the pie rest for 5-10 minutes before serving to allow the layers to set.
Notes
This dish is a variation of a Shepherd's Pie (traditionally made with lamb) or Cottage Pie. T-Pain emphasizes the importance of seasoning the meat well. You can add peas or carrots to the beef mixture for extra nutrition.
