Ingredients
- 1.5 cup long-grain white rice
- 2 large yellow onions (Thinly sliced)
- 3 tbsp butter (Divided: 2 tbsp for the onions and 1 tbsp for the rice)
- 2 garlic (Cloves, minced)
- 2.5 cup beef broth
- 1 packet French onion soup mix
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 0.5 tsp dried thyme
- 0.5 tsp black pepper
- 0.5 cup grated Gruyère or mozzarella (Optional)
- fresh parsley (For garnish)
Steps
- 1
Melt 2 tbsp of butter in a large oven-safe skillet over medium-low heat.
- 2
Add the sliced onions and cook for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft, golden, and caramelized.
- 3
Add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
- 4
Add the uncooked rice and the remaining 1 tbsp of butter. Toast the rice for 1–2 minutes, stirring frequently.
- 5
Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Stir in the French onion soup mix, dried thyme, and black pepper.
- 6
Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to low.
- 7
Cover the skillet and cook over low heat for 18–20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and has absorbed the liquid.
- 8
If using cheese, sprinkle the Gruyère or mozzarella over the rice.
- 9
Cover for 2–3 minutes, until the cheese melts. For a golden topping, place the skillet under the oven broiler for 1–2 minutes.
- 10
Gently fluff the rice with a fork, garnish with fresh parsley, and serve hot as a side dish with your favorite protein.
Notes
The recipe calls for a large oven-safe skillet. The cheese is optional. Use the broiler only if you want a golden topping.
