Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 0.5 tsp dried mustard (mustard powder)
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika (The instructions refer to this as paprika.)
  • 1 tbsp garlic (minced)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup jasmine rice (rinsed)
  • 2 cups broccoli (roughly chopped; do not chop too small)
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1.5 cups Colby Jack cheese (shredded; about 1 cup is stirred in and the remainder is used for topping)
  • dried parsley (for sprinkling; amount not specified)

Steps

  1. 1

Chop the onion. Roughly chop the broccoli into smaller pieces, keeping the pieces large enough that they do not completely fall apart during cooking.

  2. 2

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.

  3. 3

Add the chopped onion and ground beef to the skillet, spreading the beef evenly across the pan.

  4. 4

Season the beef and onion with the salt, black pepper, dried mustard, onion powder, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and smoked paprika.

  5. 5

Cook until the ground beef is browned. Remove any excess grease from the skillet if needed.

  6. 6

Add the minced garlic and Worcestershire sauce to the browned beef mixture and stir to combine.

  7. 7

Add the rinsed jasmine rice, chopped broccoli, and beef broth to the skillet.

  8. 8

Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low and cover the skillet with a lid.

  9. 9

Cook covered for about 15–20 minutes, or until the rice is cooked.

  10. 10

Add about 1 cup of the shredded Colby Jack cheese and stir it into the skillet until combined.

  11. 11

Top the skillet with the remaining shredded cheese. Cover with the lid and let it stand for a few minutes, until the cheese melts. Alternatively, place the skillet under the broiler for just a few minutes to melt the cheese.

  12. 12

Sprinkle with dried parsley, if desired, and serve.

Notes

The source states that the dish takes about 30 minutes. It does not specify an amount of dried parsley or an exact melting time. If using the broiler, use a broiler-safe skillet and watch closely.
