Ingredients
- potatoes (5-6 potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced)
- 3 tbsp butter (Used for the sauce and to grease the baking dish)
- 1 onion (Thinly sliced)
- 4 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cup whole milk
- 0.5 tbsp salt (Plus more to taste)
- 0.5 tbsp black pepper
- 0.5 cup cheddar cheese (Half is added to the sauce and the remainder is added before the final bake)
- 0.5 cup mozzarella cheese (Half is added to the sauce and the remainder is added before the final bake)
- 0.25 cup Parmesan cheese (Added before the final bake)
- 0.5 tbsp garlic powder
- 1 onion (A second onion is listed in the source; preparation is not separately specified)
- parsley (Fresh and chopped, for garnish)
- chives (Listed as an ingredient; no amount or method specified)
Steps
- 1
Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- 2
Grease an oven-safe baking dish with some of the butter.
- 3
Peel the potatoes and slice them thinly. Thinly slice the onion.
- 4
Place the sliced potatoes and onion in the prepared baking dish.
- 5
Heat the remaining butter in a pan.
- 6
Add the flour to the melted butter and stir to combine.
- 7
Slowly add the milk while vigorously whisking to remove any lumps.
- 8
Turn the heat to low. Add the salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
- 9
Add half of the cheddar and half of the mozzarella to the sauce, stirring until incorporated.
- 10
Pour the sauce evenly over the potatoes and onions, covering them.
- 11
Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- 12
After 45 minutes, remove the foil and add the remaining cheddar and mozzarella along with the Parmesan cheese.
- 13
Return the dish to the oven and bake for another 30-45 minutes, or until the potatoes are done and the top is nicely golden brown.
- 14
Remove the gratin from the oven and garnish with fresh chopped parsley. Serve and enjoy.
Notes
The source lists chives but does not specify an amount or how they are used. It also lists onion twice; the second listing may be an accidental duplicate. The source does not specify the baking-dish size or a resting time.
