- 1.5 tsp ground cinnamon (For the apple filling)
- 0.25 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract (For the apple filling)
- 0.5 cup salted butter (1 stick, sliced; melted in the 9×9-inch baking dish)
- 2.5 cup all-purpose flour
- 3 tsp baking powder
- 1.5 tsp kosher salt
- 0.333 cup granulated sugar
- 0.5 tsp ground cinnamon (For the biscuit batter)
- 2 cup buttermilk
- 2 tbsp salted butter (Melted; for the dough)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract (For the biscuit batter)
- turbinado sugar (For topping, generously)
- butter (For serving, if desired)
- maple syrup (For serving, if desired)
Steps
- 1
Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C). Line a sheet pan for placing beneath the baking dish during baking.
- 2
Cook the peeled, small-diced apples in 2 tablespoons salted butter with the brown sugar, 1½ teaspoons cinnamon, and nutmeg for 4–6 minutes, until the apples are slightly softened and the mixture is syrupy.
- 3
Remove the apple mixture from the heat and stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
- 4
Melt the sliced 1-stick portion of salted butter in a 9×9-inch baking dish.
- 5
In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, kosher salt, granulated sugar, and ½ teaspoon cinnamon.
- 6
Stir the buttermilk, 2 tablespoons melted salted butter, and 1 teaspoon vanilla into the dry ingredients to form the biscuit batter.
- 7
Fold the cooked apples into the biscuit batter.
- 8
Spread the batter evenly over the melted butter in the baking dish.
- 9
Score the batter into 9 biscuits, then top generously with turbinado sugar.
- 10
Place the baking dish on the lined sheet pan. Bake for 30–35 minutes. If the biscuits are well browned around 25–27 minutes, loosely tent the dish with foil and continue baking until finished.
- 11
Serve the biscuits warm, with butter and maple syrup if desired.
Notes
The source does not state a doneness test beyond the 30–35-minute bake time and browning cue. The recipe uses a 9×9-inch baking dish and yields 9 scored biscuits.
