Ingredients
- 1.5 cup all-purpose flour (1 cup sifted plus 1/2 cup reserved for kneading and rolling)
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 0.25 tsp baking powder
- 0.5 cup Kraft Macaroni & Cheese cheese topping powder (or 2 packages dry cheese powder from 2 boxes Kraft Macaroni & Cheese)
- 3 tbsp shortening
- 0.333 cup buttermilk
- 0.5 tsp salt (for tops)
Steps
- 1
In a large bowl, combine 1 cup of sifted flour, baking soda, baking powder, and the cheese powder.
- 2
Cut in the shortening using a pastry blender or two knives until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- 3
Add the buttermilk and mix until the dough forms a ball.
- 4
On a floured surface, using the reserved 1/2 cup of flour as needed, knead the dough briefly and then roll it out very thin (about 1/16th of an inch).
- 5
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- 6
Cut the dough into 1-inch squares using a pastry wheel or a knife.
- 7
Place the squares on an ungreased baking sheet and prick the center of each cracker with a toothpick.
- 8
Lightly sprinkle the tops with the 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
- 9
Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until the edges are lightly browned and crackers are crisp.
- 10
Remove from the oven and let cool completely on a wire rack.
Notes
Two boxes of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese will provide enough cheese powder for approximately 300 crackers. You can use the leftover elbow macaroni for other recipes. Source: Even More Top Secret Recipes by Todd Wilbur.
