Ingredients

  • 0.5 cup Crisco vegetable shortening
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 0.125 tsp salt
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 0.25 cup water (Milk or a dairy-free milk substitute may be used instead.)

Steps

  1. 1

Place the Crisco, vanilla, and salt in a medium bowl. Beat with a mixer on high speed until light and fluffy.

  2. 2

Switch the mixer to low speed. Alternate adding the powdered sugar and the liquid until the ingredients are completely blended.

  3. 3

Beat the frosting on high speed until smooth and fluffy, about 2 minutes.

Notes

A cook's note on the source reports that unsweetened almond milk worked well as a dairy-free substitute. The same note cautions that water may produce a very hard frosting the next morning.
