Ingredients
- 2 cup Sugar
- 1 cup Water
- 0.25 cup Corn syrup
- Food coloring (your favorite color)
- Corn starch (for dusting and stretching)
Steps
- 1
In a saucepan, mix together two cups of sugar, one cup of water, a fourth cup of corn syrup, and your favorite food coloring.
- 2
Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a boil.
- 3
Continue boiling the mixture until it reaches a temperature of 260 degrees Fahrenheit (hard ball stage).
- 4
Transfer the hot syrup into a container and place it into the fridge for about 30 minutes to cool and set.
- 5
Once cooled, pop the sugar block out of the container onto a surface covered with corn starch.
- 6
Poke a hole in the center of the sugar block to create a ring.
- 7
Gradually start stretching the ring out, keeping it coated in corn starch to prevent sticking.
- 8
Fold the ring into a figure-eight and double it over, then continue stretching and folding.
- 9
Repeat the stretching and folding process until the sugar strands become thin, fluffy, and resemble individual hairs.
Notes
This technique is similar to making Dragon's Beard candy or Kosh helva. The corn starch is essential to keep the strands from fusing back together.
