Ingredients
- 1 puff pastry sheet (Chilled and completely thawed according to package instructions.)
- 0.5 apple (Finely sliced or chopped into small cubes; red apples are recommended for extra sweetness.)
- 1 tsp cinnamon (Ground; the body notes using a generous 1/2 teaspoon per pastry square.)
- nutmeg (2 pinches, or a small sprinkling.)
- 2 tsp maple syrup (Use 1/2 to 1 teaspoon for each pastry square.)
- powdered sugar (Optional, for garnish.)
Steps
- 1
Finely slice the apple, or chop it into small cubes, and set it aside.
- 2
Assemble the maple syrup, ground cinnamon, and nutmeg. Thaw the puff pastry sheet according to the package instructions, keeping it chilled while ensuring it is completely thawed so it will not tear or bake unevenly.
- 3
Cut the thawed puff pastry sheet into equal-sized rectangles or squares.
- 4
For the oven method, preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). While it heats, line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- 5
Spoon 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of maple syrup onto each puff pastry square.
- 6
Place sliced apple or apple cubes on top of the maple syrup on each square.
- 7
Top the apples with some cinnamon and nutmeg.
- 8
Place another piece of puff pastry on top of the apples. Gently press down with your fingers to remove air, then press the sides down with a fork.
- 9
Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 8–10 minutes, until the puff pastry is golden brown and puffed.
- 10
Using a spatula, flip the upside-down apple tarts. Serve when ready.
- 11
For the air-fryer method, preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 4 minutes.
- 12
Place a sheet of parchment paper in the air-fryer basket and assemble the puff pastry upside-down tarts on it.
- 13
Spoon 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of maple syrup onto each puff pastry square.
- 14
Place sliced apple or apple cubes on top of the maple syrup, then top with cinnamon and nutmeg.
- 15
Place a piece of puff pastry on top of the apples. Gently press down with your fingers to remove air, then press the sides down with a fork.
- 16
Carefully place the parchment paper with the tarts in the air-fryer basket. Air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 4–6 minutes, until the puff pastry is golden brown and nicely puffed.
- 17
Carefully flip the upside-down apple tarts and remove them onto a plate. If they are not golden enough on the front side, air fry them for another 2–3 minutes at 400°F (200°C). Serve hot, optionally sprinkled with powdered sugar.
Notes
Leave enough space between the tarts so they can puff properly. These are best eaten fresh because puff pastry loses its flakiness during storage, but they can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Reheat briefly in the oven or air fryer to crisp them before serving. Do not freeze.
