Ingredients
- 3 tbsp sugar
- 5 tbsp soybean paste (Japanese miso paste may be substituted; the source notes it is slightly saltier and suggests adding a little salt to adjust the taste.)
- 1 tsp sesame butter
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp fine chili powder
- 1 red fermented bean curd (Optional; the source's ingredient list says “1 pieces.”)
- 0.25 tsp five spice powder
- 3 tbsp water
- 1 tsp dark soy sauce (Add little by little until the color is close to commercial hoisin sauce.)
Steps
- 1
Combine the sugar, soybean paste, sesame butter, garlic powder, chili powder, red fermented bean curd, five-spice powder, and water in a saucepan. Mix thoroughly.
- 2
Use a spatula to crush the individual soybeans until the mixture is smooth. For a larger batch, pass the sauce through a sieve.
- 3
Add the dark soy sauce little by little, mixing as you go, until the color is close to that of commercial hoisin sauce.
- 4
Stir the mixture over low heat for a few minutes.
- 5
Transfer the sauce to a sealed container for storage. The source says it keeps for 2 months in the refrigerator or 6 months in the freezer.
Notes
Makes about 1/2 cup. The sauce can replace store-bought hoisin in cooking. The source notes that red fermented bean curd is optional and that Japanese miso paste can replace soybean paste; because miso is saltier, add a little salt to adjust the taste if needed.
