Ingredients
- 150 g minced chicken or beef (ground meat)
- 1.5 tbsp onion (grated, with juice squeezed out)
- 2 tbsp potato or carrot (grated)
- 2 tbsp cooked rice or soaked bread (used as a binder)
- 0.25 tsp turmeric (optional spice)
- 0.25 tsp paprika (optional spice)
- 0.125 tsp cinnamon (optional spice)
- 1 tbsp olive oil (for frying)
- 3 tbsp water (added to the pan for gentle frying)
- 2.5 tbsp homemade unsalted tomato sauce (optional, for extra flavor at the end)
Steps
- 1
Prepare the vegetables by grating the onion and squeezing out the excess liquid. Grate the potato or carrot finely.
- 2
In a medium mixing bowl, combine the minced meat, grated onion, grated potato or carrot, cooked rice or soaked bread, and the spices (turmeric, paprika, and cinnamon).
- 3
Mix the ingredients thoroughly by hand until the mixture is soft and the ingredients are evenly distributed.
- 4
With slightly wet hands to prevent sticking, form the mixture into small meatballs, roughly the size of a walnut or smaller for easier baby handling.
- 5
Heat a non-stick pan over low heat. Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil and a few tablespoons of water to the pan.
- 6
Place the meatballs into the pan. Gently fry them, turning carefully with a spatula or tongs, until they are lightly golden on all sides. Be careful not to over-fry them to ensure they remain soft and easy for the baby to chew.
- 7
If using, add 2–3 tablespoons of homemade unsalted tomato sauce to the pan at the end of cooking and toss the meatballs gently to coat for extra flavor.
Notes
Ensure the meat is cooked through to a safe internal temperature. For babies, it is important to keep the meatballs soft, so the addition of water in the pan helps steam them slightly while they brown. Avoid adding salt for babies under 12 months.
