Ingredients

  • 0.5 can Spam (sliced into rectangles)
  • 2 cup Cooked White Rice
  • Sugar (for seasoning the spam sauce)
  • Soy Sauce (for seasoning the spam)
  • Korean Seaweed (Gim) (sheets cut into strips)
  • Sesame Oil (for seasoning the rice)

Steps

  1. 1

Slice the Spam into rectangular pieces and pan-fry them in a skillet over medium heat until browned on both sides.

  2. 2

Season the Spam with a mixture of soy sauce and sugar (teriyaki style) while in the pan, allowing the sauce to glaze the meat.

  3. 3

Season the cooked white rice with a drizzle of sesame oil and a pinch of salt if desired.

  4. 4

Using the empty Spam can as a mold (lined with plastic wrap for easy removal), layer the seasoned rice and a slice of glazed Spam inside.

  5. 5

Press down firmly to form a compact block, then remove from the mold.

  6. 6

Wrap a strip of Korean seaweed (gim) around the center of the rice ball to secure it.

Notes

The recipe is inspired by Korean convenience store (GS25) style rice balls. Using the Spam can as a mold is a common hack for uniform shapes.
