Ingredients

  • 125 ml water (For the gelatin version)
  • 10 g gelatin (For the gelatin version)
  • 1 tsp food-grade glycerine (For the gelatin version)
  • 1 tsp agar agar (Vegetarian substitute; the finished sheet may be more brittle and mildly grainy)
  • 150 ml water (For the vegetarian version)
  • 1 tsp food-grade glycerine (For the vegetarian version)

Steps

  1. 1

For the gelatin version, combine 125 ml water, 10 g gelatin, and 1 teaspoon food-grade glycerine. Let the mixture sit for 5–10 minutes.

  2. 2

Microwave the mixture or gently heat it in a pan until the gelatin has dissolved. Do not leave undissolved gelatin in the mixture.

  3. 3

Spread the dissolved mixture over a nonstick surface, such as a nonstick acetate sheet. Spread it into a thin, even layer.

  4. 4

Leave the sheet undisturbed for at least 1–2 days, or until completely dry. Drying time can vary with the climate; it is ready when the water has evaporated and the sheet begins to peel away from the surface.

  5. 5

Peel the dried edible plastic from the nonstick surface and use it for cake decoration or wrapping.

  6. 6

For the vegetarian version, combine 1 teaspoon agar agar with 150 ml water and boil the mixture.

  7. 7

Remove the agar-agar mixture from the heat and add 1 teaspoon food-grade glycerine.

  8. 8

Spread the mixture over a nonstick surface or tray in a thin, even layer.

  9. 9

Leave it to rest for at least 2 days, until completely dry.

  10. 10

Peel the dried vegetarian edible plastic from the surface and use it for decoration.

Notes

The gelatin and vegetarian versions are alternatives, not intended to be prepared together. The vegetarian agar-agar version is more brittle and has a mildly grainy texture. The source does not specify an exact heating temperature, layer thickness, or final storage method. Drying time depends on climate and may take longer than the minimum stated.
