Ingredients

  • 1 loaf Long baguette
  • 2 Garlic cloves
  • 3.5 Fresh tomatoes (Medium tomatoes; freshly chopped and drained. Source states 3–4 tomatoes.)
  • Fresh basil (A handful, shredded)
  • Extra-virgin olive oil (Drizzle or brush over the bread, plus one optional small drizzle over the tomatoes)
  • Balsamic vinegar (Drizzle; optional)
  • Salt (A pinch; optional)

Steps

  1. 1

    Preheat the oven to 450°F.

  2. 2

Slice the baguette into 1/2-inch slices.

  3. 3

In a separate bowl, mix the drained chopped tomatoes, shredded basil, and optional balsamic vinegar. Set the tomato mixture aside.

  4. 4

Arrange the bread slices for baking. Bake for 4 minutes on each side, until golden brown.

  5. 5

Remove the bread from the oven and gently rub the garlic cloves over the toasted slices.

  6. 6

Drizzle or brush olive oil over the bread.

  7. 7

Top the toasted slices with the tomato mixture just before serving to help keep the bread from becoming soggy.

  8. 8

Optionally, add one small drizzle of olive oil over the tomatoes to help spread the flavor.

  9. 9

    Serve warm if possible.

Notes

The source does not specify the amount of olive oil or balsamic vinegar. Add the tomato topping immediately before serving so the bread remains crisp.
