Ingredients

  • Water (For boiling the potatoes and egg)
  • Potatoes (Boil until soft, then peel and mash)
  • Egg (Boil, cool in an ice bath, peel, and mash)
  • Ice (For an ice bath)
  • Japanese mayonnaise (Add to the potato-and-egg salad)
  • Sweet relish (The creator uses relish; cucumber or pickles are mentioned as alternatives used in other versions)
  • Salt (To taste)
  • Black pepper (To taste)
  • Cabbage (Thinly slice, then chop into smaller pieces)
  • Imitation crab (Shred; the creator notes it can be found packaged in the frozen section of Asian stores)
  • Mayonnaise (For the cabbage salad)
  • Ketchup (Optional; the creator adds a little)
  • 4 slices Bread (Cut off the crusts)
  • Grape jelly (The creator uses grape jelly; strawberry jelly is described as the usual choice)

Steps

  1. 1

Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add the potatoes and egg. Boil the potatoes until soft; place the egg in an ice bath when it is cooked, then peel it.

  2. 2

Mash the peeled egg in a mixing bowl.

  3. 3

When the potatoes are soft, strain them and remove their peels. The potatoes may break apart because they will be mashed. Mash them thoroughly and add them to the bowl with the egg.

  4. 4

Add Japanese mayonnaise and sweet relish to the potato-and-egg mixture. Season with salt and pepper, then mix until well combined.

  5. 5

Thinly slice the cabbage and chop it into smaller pieces. Place it in a separate bowl.

  6. 6

Shred the imitation crab and add it to the cabbage. Add mayonnaise and a little ketchup, then season with salt and pepper. Mix until combined.

  7. 7

Take four slices of bread and cut off the crusts.

  8. 8

Place the potato-and-egg salad on the bottom slice of bread and spread it evenly.

  9. 9

Spread grape jelly over the second slice of bread. Place that slice jelly-side down on top of the potato salad.

  10. 10

Add the cabbage-and-imitation-crab salad on top of the jelly layer.

  11. 11

Top the sandwich with the fourth slice of bread and press it down slightly and tightly.

  12. 12

Wrap the sandwich tightly in plastic wrap and let it sit for about 10 minutes so the layers set and meld together.

  13. 13

Cut the sandwich in half and serve.

Notes

The creator emphasizes eyeballing the ingredients and customizing the amounts. Strawberry jelly is customary, but grape jelly is used here. Cucumber or pickles may be used instead of relish in other versions. The source does not specify the number or size of potatoes and the egg, boiling time, or exact quantities for the salads and spreads.
