Ingredients
- 16 oz Super firm tofu (Vacuum-packed tofu is recommended; if using extra-firm tofu, press it for at least 30 minutes.)
- 2 tbsp Vegan mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp Soy sauce
- 2 tsp White vinegar
- 1 tbsp Water (More as needed.)
- 2 tbsp Nutritional yeast
- 0.5 tsp Garlic powder
- 0.5 tsp Onion powder
- 0.5 tsp Smoked paprika
- 1 tsp Dried parsley
- 1 tsp Dried thyme
- 1 tbsp Cooking oil (Used for each pan batch as needed; the source specifies about 1 tablespoon before cooking the tofu.)
Steps
- 1
If using extra-firm rather than vacuum-packed super-firm tofu, press it for at least 30 minutes before proceeding.
- 2
Make the marinade by whisking the vegan mayonnaise, soy sauce, white vinegar, water, nutritional yeast, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, dried parsley, and dried thyme together. Add more water as needed to loosen the mixture.
- 3
Grate the tofu using the large holes of a cheese grater.
- 4
Heat a non-stick or well-seasoned pan over medium heat. Add about 1 tablespoon of cooking oil, then add half of the shredded tofu. Cook in two batches to avoid overcrowding the pan.
- 5
Spread the tofu into an even layer and cook without stirring for 3–4 minutes, or until golden brown.
- 6
Flip the tofu and cook the other side until browned to your liking. Remove the cooked tofu from the pan.
- 7
Repeat the oiling and cooking process with the remaining half of the shredded tofu, cooking it in an even layer and flipping once browned.
- 8
Pour the marinade over the cooked tofu and stir to combine.
- 9
Cook the tofu and marinade for another 3–4 minutes, or until browned to your liking.
- 10
Enjoy immediately, or refrigerate for 3–5 days.
Notes
The author recommends super-firm, vacuum-packed tofu because it does not require pressing and becomes crispier. The recipe is versatile and can be served in BBQ sandwiches, tacos, wraps, or other dishes. The source notes that avoiding overcrowding the pan helps the tofu brown more quickly.
