- 5 g Baker’s yeast (1 sachet)
- 150 ml Lukewarm water
- 2 tbsp Sugar
- 1 tsp Baking powder
- 30 g Neutral oil (Used in the dough and to oil part of the edge before folding.)
Steps
- 1
In a bowl, mix the lukewarm water, baker’s yeast, and sugar together.
- 2
In a separate bowl, mix the flour and salt. Make a small well in the center.
- 3
Pour the water-and-yeast mixture into the well, then add the neutral oil.
- 4
Mix with a spatula until the ingredients come together, then knead the dough by hand for 5–6 minutes.
- 5
Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for 1 hour 30 minutes.
- 6
Deflate the risen dough and divide it into 8 portions.
- 7
Shape each portion into a circle first with your hands, then with a rolling pin. Place the circles on parchment paper.
- 8
Oil part of the edge of each circle, then fold each one closed to form a bao bun.
- 9
Cover the shaped buns again with a kitchen towel and let them rest for 30 minutes.
- 10
Steam the buns in a steam pressure cooker for 5 minutes.
Notes
The source describes these as folded gua bao buns, which may be filled after cooking, but it does not provide a filling recipe. The steaming vessel is described as an “ultra cooker” used for steaming.
