Ingredients

  • 4 carrots (Peeled and finely grated; drain excess liquid if very moist.)
  • 0.5 onion (Finely chopped.)
  • 1 cup rolled oats (Briefly processed until coarsely ground, or used directly.)
  • 1 egg (Lightly beaten to help bind the mixture.)
  • 2 cloves garlic (Minced or grated.)
  • 1 tsp sweet paprika
  • 0.5 tsp ground cumin
  • salt (To taste.)
  • black pepper (To taste.)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (For cooking the burgers; the amount can be reduced when using a nonstick skillet.)
  • 4 hamburger buns (Optional, for serving.)
  • 4 lettuce leaves (Optional, for serving.)
  • 1 tomato (Sliced, optional.)

Steps

  1. 1

Peel and finely grate the carrots. If they release a lot of liquid, place them in a clean kitchen towel or colander and squeeze them lightly; the mixture should be moist but not watery.

  2. 2

Place the grated carrot, chopped onion, oats, egg, garlic, paprika, and cumin in a large bowl.

  3. 3

Add salt and pepper to taste. Mix with a spatula or clean hands until all the ingredients are evenly distributed and the mixture can be compacted.

  4. 4

Let the mixture rest for 5 to 10 minutes so the oats can absorb some of the moisture. If it is still too loose, add 1 or 2 more tablespoons of oats.

  5. 5

Divide the mixture into four equal portions. Shape into patties approximately 1.5 cm thick, pressing firmly so they do not fall apart when flipped.

  6. 6

Heat the olive oil in a nonstick skillet over medium heat. When hot, add the burgers, leaving space between them.

  7. 7

Cook the burgers for 4 or 5 minutes on the first side, without moving them too much, until the base is golden and firm.

  8. 8

Flip each burger with a wide spatula. Cook for another 4 or 5 minutes, until the second side is golden and the center feels firm.

  9. 9

Toast the buns if using. Serve each burger in a bun with lettuce and tomato, or serve with a salad to keep the dish light.

Notes

The visible post only indicates that these are easy, low-calorie carrot burgers; the quantities and method were estimated. For an even lighter version, cook the burgers in a nonstick skillet with very little oil and serve them without buns.
