Ingredients

  • 40 oz young jackfruit (Roughly 2 large cans, packed in water or brine; drained, rinsed, patted dry, and cored)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp liquid smoke (Optional)
  • 1 tbsp paprika
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (For cooking)
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce

Steps

  1. 1

Drain and rinse the jackfruit, then lightly pat it dry. Cut off the core—the pointed center portion—so that you are left with the outer pieces that shred easily.

  2. 2

Place the jackfruit in a large bowl and lightly shred it with two forks; it will be shredded further during cooking.

  3. 3

Add the garlic powder, chili powder, salt, liquid smoke if using, paprika, and brown sugar. Toss until the jackfruit is fully coated in the seasonings.

  4. 4

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the seasoned jackfruit and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring often, until heated through. As it cooks, break up the jackfruit further with the back of a wooden spoon or the forks.

  5. 5

Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in the barbecue sauce. Serve and enjoy.

Notes

The recipe uses young green jackfruit, commonly sold canned in water or brine. Liquid smoke is optional and provides additional smoky flavor. The source describes the jackfruit as lightly crisp around the edges after sautéing.
